Major Facilities at the EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea

For the past several months, the landscape of Yeosu, Jeollanam-do has been undergoing a dramatic transformation, as megastructures continued to shape up for the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. From the world’s first offshore exhibition hall to Korea’s largest aquarium, and from large pavilions featuring exhibitions by different countries, companies and organizations to the large “O”-shaped monument displaying fantastic multimedia and fountain shows, the Expo site looks to becoming the next destination of the ingenuity of modern architectural designs. With the opening of the Expo approaching fast, we suggest reading up on the facilities before stepping into the world of “The Living Ocean and Coast.”
1. The Big-O
The Big-O is a 43m-tall, oval monument that stands at the center on the Expo site. Enclosed is a water screen that shows videos, while the outer rim is installed with devices that produce water jets, mist, flames, lights, lasers, etc. The Big-O also holds a variety of exciting shows, including a fountain show that features the world’s first hologram video technology. Finally, the “O” represents ‘ocean’ and the number “0” to further highlight the oceans as the fundamentals of a new beginning.
2. EXPO Digital Gallery (EDG)
Measuring 415m in length and 21m in width, the EDG is a large LED display that covers the entire ceiling and walls of the main street on the Expo site. During the Expo period, anyone with a smartphone may submit their photos via special mobile application for the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea; the submitted photos are then collected to create large moving images of whales on the display. Through diverse exhibitions, the EDG aims to highlight the importance of nature to humanity.
3. Sky Tower
At 67m, the Sky Tower is the tallest building at the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. Once an abandoned cement warehouse, the Tower has been transformed into a large cultural space divided into two sections: one featuring promotional videos, sounds and lights, and the other demonstrating seawater desalination.

In addition, the Sky Tower has a pipe organ on the exterior, and an observatory at the top. The pipe organ, which has earned the Guinness World Record for the loudest pipe organ, signals the opening and closing of the Expo each day, and regularly plays the national anthems of the participating countries as well as other music. Last but not least, the observatory offers fantastic views of the Expo site, Yeosu Sea, and Odongdo Island.
4. Theme Pavilion
Theme Pavilion, the world’s first pavilion to be built offshore, is the main hall that exhibits the theme of the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, “The Living Ocean and Coast,” and that promotes awareness for the oceans. Inside the pavilion, different images of the five oceans are shown on the 20m-long video wall display and the half-moon video screen of 5m diameter, rendering an underwater atmosphere. The main show featuring a boy’s quest for the Sea of Life and a dugong’s adventure is particularly interesting. Finally, there is the Giant Clam that changes daily throughout the entire Expo period according to visitor participation.
5. Korea Pavilion
Built in the shape of a taegeuk (yin-yang), Korea Pavilion is the representative pavilion of Korea. Its major features include an exhibition hall showcasing various media presentations using digital and analog technologies, and a media hall playing different films about the future of Korea’s role in the global marine industry, as well as Korea’s beautiful marine scenery.
6. Aquarium/Marine Life Pavilion
At 6,030㎡, Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Korea. It is divided into three sections: Coast Life Pavilion (Sea Mammal Room), where visitors can observe belugas, penguins, Baikal seals, fur seals, etc.; Marine Life Pavilion (Sea Experience Room), where visitors can interact with sharks, sting rays, sardines, sea turtles, jellyfish, etc.; Eco-Terrarium, which simulates the ecological features of the Amazon.

Situated inside the aquarium building is the Marine Life Pavilion, which houses mudflat and marine ecosystem centers. The mudflat ecosystem center introduces different types of mudflats and mudflat organisms, while the marine ecosystem center uses a 4D submarine simulator to explore the aquatic life 6,000m under water.
7. Climate Environment Pavilion
The Climate Environment Pavilion is equipped with facilities that simulate the climates of the North and South Poles such as an ice tunnel, blizzard machine, and glacial wall. Ultimately, it aims to promote the importance of the ocean in mitigating climate change.

The Multi-channel Multiplex is a large theater with screen walls and ceiling that shows films on the effects of global warming on civilization, mitigation of climate change, and protection of marine environment.
8. Marine Civilization & City Pavilions
The Marine Civilization and City Pavilions are established to illuminate “Humankind’s Challenges and Achievements with the Sea.” Representing the past, the Marine Civilization Pavilion showcases a large compass, and model vessels that demonstrate ancient lifestyles on the ocean. On the other hand, the Marine City Pavilion explores possibilities of living under the sea by displaying various images of future maritime cities and lifestyles.
9. Marine Industrial & Technology Pavilion
The Marine Industrial & Technology Pavilion suggests the ocean as an alternative solution to natural resource crises, and focuses largely on seaweed and its potentials for creating new energy, materials, food and drugs. Furthermore, the Pavilion aims to promote the importance of combining natural marine resources and technology in producing a “blue economy,” an economic system based on combining opportunities occurring in various environmental and ecological cycles.
10. International Pavilion
Covering the largest area on the Expo site, the International Pavilion is the main space for exhibitions by 106 participating countries. It is divided into five sections, each of which is named after Earth’s five oceans, and also features diverse types of modules in order to accommodate unique exhibitions. On the second floor are restaurants serving and selling specialty dishes from around the world. Lastly, the exterior of the Pavilion is designed to embody the islands of the Dadohae National Marine Park.
11. Local Governments Pavilion
The Local Governments* Pavilion features exhibitions by a total of 23 local offices representing Suncheon, Gwangyang, Boseong, Goheung, Namhae, Hadong, as well as 16 metropolitan areas. The exhibitions reflect each region’s distinct characteristics.

* Local governments are autonomous entities endowed with partial public administration rights from the nation. The Korean Constitution provides for the organization and operation of the local governments.
12. International Organizations Pavilion
The International Organizations Pavilion features exhibitions by 10 international organizations, including the United Nations, International Olympic Committee, and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The exhibitions showcase the organizations’ activities as well as suggestions for future endeavors in ocean preservation.
13. EXPO Hall
Comprised of a concert hall, multi-performance theater, and conventional hall, the EXPO Hall is a fitting venue for diverse performances. During the Expo period, it will host various cultural programs as well as the Ocean Forum.
14. EXPO Plazas
Five themed plazas, including Ocean Plaza and four entrance plazas facing each direction, provide venues for a plethora of events as well as resting.
15 - 21. Corporate Pavilions
The Corporate Pavilion depicts the present and future of the shipbuilding, marine, IT and green-growth industries. It is comprised of seven individual company pavilions, representing GS, Hyundai Motor, LG, Lotte, Samsung, SK and POSCO, and one joint corporate pavilion.
22. Energy Park
The Energy Park is designed to demonstrate the vision of ‘Low Carbon, Green Growth.’ The Renewable Energy Production Facility houses a solar power plant and energy promotion center, and the Experience Zone provides platforms for energy education through energy orchestra, water cannon bikes, and a dance floor. The Park also operates an Online Electric Bus, which runs on power supplied with wireless electricity.
23. Fisheries Experience Zone (Coastal Zone and Movable Seaweed Forest)
The Fisheries Experience Zone promotes the need for marine ecosystem restoration, and provides opportunities to learn about the marine fisheries industry. It also features a movable seaweed forest, which demonstrates the pollutant absorbing and eliminating function of seaweed.
24. Ferry Terminal
The Ferry Terminal services ferries and cruise ships from Japan and China during the EXPO period.
25. Most Valuable Life (MVL) Hotel
Located on the coastal area, the MVL Hotel has rooms with fantastic waterfront views, along with fine restaurants, lounges, sauna, fitness center, etc. The hotel has been selected to accommodate VIPs from overseas during the Yeosu Expo period. Accordingly, the barbecue restaurant on the sixth floor will be serving top seafood and barbecue dishes.
26. EXPO Town
The EXPO town is the accommodation facility for family members of the Expo staff. It can accommodate up to 6,600 people (1,800 foreigners and 4,800 Koreans) in 1,442 units, and features a wide range of facilities, including a health clinic, business center, security center, public laundry, beauty shops, convenience stores, religious facilities, and more.
