Conversion of a Foreign Driver License

When a foreigner possessing a foreign driver license issued from a legitimate foreign institution, the foreign driver license must be converted to a Korean driver license.

Documents Needed

• Foreign driver license, passport, alien registration card, seal (signature possible) and 3 copies of picture (3 X 4 cm)
• Country on passport must be same with the country on foreign driver license
• Notary of translation of foreign driver license (except English) and verification from consulate general (US, England, France, Canada, Germany, Japan and Spain)
• If driver license issue date is not present, a confirmation of issue date must be provided

For Koreans with foreign nationality, they have to provide registration cards. For Koreans living abroad legally, they must provide registration cards showing Korean nationality or the certificate of Korean nationals abroad.

Obtaining a Korean driver License without a foreign driver license (Same process with Koreans)

• Requirement: reside in Korea for more than 6 months
• application/Issue: 26 driver license testing agencies nationwide
• Examination languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Chinese
• Expires after 7 years (every 5 years for type 1 for elderly people with 65 years of age or older)
• Documents needed: passport, alien registration card and 4 copies of picture
